Biography

Rosalyn Falconer completed her MChem degree at the University of Oxford and PhD in Synthetic Chemistry at the University of Bristol. She then undertook postdoctoral positions at the University of Edinburgh and the CNRS in France. In 2022, Rosalyn was awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Global Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Rosalyn joined the School of Chemical Sciences at the University of Auckland as a lecturer in 2024.

Research interests

Rosalyn’s research develops new catalysts featuring earth-abundant elements (e.g. Ti, Al). Precious metals are used extensively in catalytic processes, but due to their cost and rarity, sustainable alternatives are urgently needed. The chemistry of abundant elements can be difficult to control, therefore Rosalyn uses surface organometallic chemistry techniques to affix the metals onto solid supports and remove unwanted reactivity. These new catalytic materials then have the added benefit of being easier to separate from products and so are more applicable in industrial processes.

Earth abundant elements have so much hidden chemistry to reveal, all we need are the right tools to unlock their potential.
