Biography

Freddy Lyzwa is a Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

He studied physics at the University of Göttingen, Germany, and the Università di Bologna, Italy, and graduated with a PhD in physics from the Université de Fribourg, Switzerland, under the supervision of Christian Bernhard  in 2021. Freddy worked at the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research and at Brookhaven National Labs in New York, before coming to New Zealand and joining the Photon Factory as a SwissNSF Research Fellow.

Research interests

Freddy explores and manipulates quantum materials and complex systems, to find & design next-generation materials and photonic concepts which can offer alternative pathways for the data science, biotechnology and aerospace sector. His ‘daily bread’ is using light in various forms, such as spectroscopy and microscopy, together with (ultrafast) lasers and synchrotron light sources.

Photonics provides a way to better understand the world we are living in today, and to design future materials & methodology that next generations will inherit from us.
