There is currently a great deal of uncertainty around the health and environmental impacts of nanomaterials, and especially the long term consequences of using nanoparticles in consumer products. Simon's particular interest is in finding ways to maximize the benefits of nanotechnology related products while minimizing any possible hazards. He has argued that the government should be more pro-active and develop an adaptive regime for governing such products. He was involved in organising a workshop on these issues in 2009 and editing the report on its outcomes.
