Modelling Nano-Devices with Prof Ulrich Zuelicke

I am currently focused on researching a new paradigm of electronics called spintronics, where the magnetic properties of the electron are used to control charge flow in new devices.

Charge carriers in wires are tiny permanent magnets. In the image, the magnetisation of each particle is indicated by an arrow. When the lateral wire dimensions (Lx and Ly) are approaching the nano-metre scale, the magnetic properties of these particles become strongly variable and develop intriguing patterns. An existing magnetisation density pattern is shown at the front and back sides of the wire. Knowing such patterns makes it possible to design novel transistor-like devices where the current through the wire is controlled by an applied magnetic field.
