The DiscoveryCamp – Te Tohu Huraina

is a programme designed for year 12 or 13 Māori and Pasifika secondary pupils, with a demonstrated interest in science. DiscoveryCamp provides these students with a unique opportunity to work with our partners and scientists in research laboratories; with post graduate students providing day-to-day mentoring.

This event is intended to nurture students’ interest in science, expose them to possible career options and encourage them to enrol in a science degree programme at tertiary level.  While academic achievement is important for the selection process, so too are personal goals and teacher references.

  • One week residential programme incorporating laboratory experience and social activities (five participants per programme)
  • Open to Year 12 and Year 13 Māori & Pasifika students with a demonstrated interest in science
  • 15 – 20 January 2017 at either University of Canterbury, Christchurch  OR  Massey University, Palmerston North (Two programmes to choose from)
  • It’s free!  All flights, accommodation and meals are included in the programme

My time at The MacDiarmid Institute was a very educational, enjoyable and worthwhile.  I gained numerous skills that I will benefit from in my final year at college and also future studies at University. The hard work was absolutely worth it. I had the most wonderful experience in the labs and have found the inspiration to carry on with science in my tertiary education.” – Danielle Sword, DiscoveryCamp
