Anzode & Synthodics

A new patented battery chemistry, to empower the new generation of clean technologies. The battery electrode expertise of Simon Hall (Massey University) was licensed to Anzode Inc in 2003. The company develops and manufactures storage solutions for cleantech applications based on rechargeable stabilized zinc technology. The battery technology can be used in applications ranging from hybrid and electric vehicles, to remote power systems, to smart grid systems. Although Anzode is based in the USA, this technology is firmly grounded on MacDiarmid Institute research in electrochemistry. Anzode’s New Zealand operation is based at Callaghan Innovation. Recently, a second company, Synthodics Ltd, was established to leverage Hall’s novel battery technology. The base of energy storage commercialisation has been broadened through a collaboration involving Simon Hall, Alison Downard at University of Canterbury and Richard Tilley at Victoria University of Wellington. The purpose of this adventurous project is to develop new oxygen cathodes for batteries and fuel cells. A specific goal is to establish more rapid mechanisms for capitalising on cross- university commercialisable developments.
